I think they can try it, but they’ll just be confirming the effect of nurture vs nature. Unless, they add a socioeconomic control, and provide gene editing of babies that don’t have access to wealthy and connected parents, the efficacy of their genetic protocols would be unproven and suspicious, at best.
OTOH, one could say that they’d just have the “best” compete with the “best”, at which point let me remind everyone that having money doesn’t mean you have the best genes, and there’s no telling what effect you could have on someone with a Frankenstein monster’s combination of gene expression.
They may also want to prepare themselves for the inevitable law suits by gene-edited adults who 1) never asked for being born (at all or this way), and 2) could not consent to the procedure as the unborn.
Gene editing companies can prepare themselves better for the future of gene editing by working on approaches that can be used in adults as well, that way they can offset the potential lawsuits from gene-edited adults.
I think that vast majority of us - ordinary people end here.
They will use their power and money to engineer children with traits nowhere to be found in nature.
Fast-forward a few generations - I bet they will push our gene-sets out.

the DNA sequence is only part of what must be manipulated.
the complex of protiens, synthetic precursors, and the physical conformation of the nucleosomal superstructure, must be engineered.
